Plex double nat

The digital world is all about IP internet protocol addresses. Every device needs an IP in order to communicate on the internet or within a private network.

It stands for network address translation NAT and is a function provided by routers to enable multiple devices to access the internet via a single public IP address. And almost all equipment that provides the NAT function includes a firewall to protect the private IPs and devices from public IPs and devices on the internet. Other network services are also typically offered, like DHCP dynamic host control protocol to give out the private IP addresses to devices that connect to the local network.

Having more than one device performing NAT on a private network, however, can cause issues with that network. Some users may never notice, making it a non-issue for them. But others can run into headaches with certain applications, services, and situations. Having more than one NAT device usually happens when you connect your own router to a gateway installed by your internet service provider ISP that also includes the NAT and routing functions. Some ISPs install only a simple modem that lacks the NAT and routing functions, which eliminates the problem altogether.

This would include online gaming on computers or consoles, remote desktop into your computers, connecting to a VPN server, or accessing security camera feeds. It might only forward traffic to computers and devices directly connected to that first router, which could be either a wireless or wired connection. Double NAT can also complicate any manual or automatic quality-of-service QoS controls that prioritize traffic on your internal network to ensure lag-sensitive traffic gaming, voice, or video is given higher priority than data associated with file transers.

This is especially the case if you have devices connected to both routers, both of which have different QoS controls.

Sometimes gateways will detect double NAT and automatically fix the issue for you. Or sometimes, if the ISP installers are knowledgeable, they might fix it when they come out to install the gateway and see that you have your own router. This is easy: private addresses are usually in the Addresses outside of these ranges would be public internet addresses.

One quick way that usually shows if double NAT exists is a traceroute, which allows you to ping a server or device on the internet and see the path it takes between routers and servers.

It should be a public address. Many gateways offer these settings, but not all. Furthermore, you should also see if you can establish an IP address reservation for your router, so your gateway always gives the same private IP address to your router.Keep in touch and stay productive with Teams and Officeeven when you're working remotely. Sorry this didn't help. If you do have more than one device it would be a matter of disabling NAT on one of them, or removing the additional piece of hardware. Alright so I've just moved to Spain and we got a modem router and ive just noticed that my NAT type on xbox is strict and it says that a Double NAT is detected and i don't really know to solve it or do anything to change that.

Joined Apr 15, Messages 3. Hello All, Firstly i would like to apologize if I'm posting this in the wrong section. I have used the search but was unable to find the an answer to this. My current network setup is as follow. This means I'm behind a double NAT.

I have no access to the building network infrastructure. Everyone is sitting in the same Vlan and in the same subnet. That is why i have my own internal network. For a very long time i have tried to set up a connection between my father and my home network to give him access to plex. I was very happy to find that FreeNAS supports Zerotier right out of the box, but sad to find out it does not support it anymore since Joined Jan 1, Messages 2, Yes, you will be able to do that, but will need more attention than with ZeroTier.

Best to have his side as the server and yours as the peer. Would there be any possible way i can still get zerotier working instead? Don't upgrade? To implement I have an ubuntu I can ssh from my plex server also ubuntu The tunnel is successful. From the remote host here is netstat and nc -v to the loopback interface:.

But as you can see, it is not listening on its public IP The only other active interface besides loopback is eth0, which is assigned the public IP address. So if I attempt to access remote server public IP I get nothing. How do I get my remote server to be listening on eth0, while still forwarding that to my localserver? I already had an empty bind address, the problem was I needed to specify to bind to all addresses, like this:.

From man 1 ssh :. By default, the listening socket on the server will be bound to the loopback interface only.

To get the proper Plex traffic in and out of your network, you will need to set up port forwarding on your router pointing to your server.

You will need to know four things:. Click on the settings icon in the upper left-hand corner. Write these numbers down for future reference. Verizon Fios will usually have it at Otherwise, your ISPs website is the best resource to use. Again, your ISP is the best resource to obtain that username and password. The password combination can differ from device to device, even if they are provided from the same ISP.

Once all that has been entered correctly, save these settings. Once you have finished working on your router settings you will need to go back to your Plex settings.

First off, you should now see that the remote access tab is marked with a green checkmark. If not, retest your remote access and try again by refreshing the remote access. Computers usually hate us, so sometimes its necessary to click retest several times before it will present that checkmark. Show your computer who is boss — click it a few times if necessary.

Some local networks will have a modem as well as a separate router. Afterwards, you will need to daisy chain the port forward. Port forward as shown above on the modem to the IP of your router. Like a breadcrumb trail to allow the data to be led out and back into your server.

This method will keep the flow of information to the server even if there is a power outage, reboot, or your computer just flat out wants to make your life miserable. If your Plex Media Server is not set as the same IP day in and day out, the local address may change. But it can be an issue if you play online games or use port forwarding rules and UPnP.

Learn more about Double NAT. If this router is independent of your modem, power off and unplug this router and directly connect your modem to your Google Nest Wifi router or primary Google Wifi point. That should do the trick. This will take care of the potential double NAT issue. Steps will vary depending on the device. Many ISPs and manufacturers provide instructions on how to do this.

A single Google Wifi point or Google Nest Wifi router that is not part of a mesh system can be set to bridge mode. These protective features are most effective -- and in some cases, only effective -- when all traffic passes through your Nest Wifi router or primary Google Wifi point instead of through another router.

Connecting two routers can extend the Wi-Fi coverage in your home. But when you have two routers -- each with their own private Wi-Fi network -- your personal devices can have a hard time communicating with each other.

This scenario is called Double NAT. This can also result in performance issues if you play online games or use port forwarding rules and UPnP.

Bridge mode fixes this by letting multiple routers share one single Wi-Fi network. But it can be an issue if you play online games or use IP address assignments, port forwarding rules, and UPnP. Google Help. Privacy Policy Terms of Service Submit feedback.

I am purchased a TP Link MR which has set up correctly and the uPNP has set up the port correctly and I can use Plex over the local network however I cannot connect to it from an external connection. Plex is telling me that it thinks the issue is due to a Double NAT scenary.

I checked my routers IP address against whatismyip. I have also tested this on an Optus ACs mobile router and I get the same issue. Another thing to look at is perhaps a VPN to provide an external IP - there is a way around it but thats out of my knowledge unfortunately. Thanks Paddylee, unfortunately I've just signed up to 12 months with Optus so I'm committed to them apparentrly there's no cool off period?
